Utility Tree Worker Safety Training

Employing safe practices is vital to your job as a Utility Tree Worker. To create a culture of safety for UTTs, the PVMA has developed a curriculum to educate & assess those who maintain trees near electrical utility installations. The Association has also contracted with a well-respected educational facility, Olds College, to deliver this curriculum to those who are interested in this important discipline.
Register for this two-week course today if you work in the vegetation management industry and are involved with the removal or trimming of trees near energized powerlines and wish to upgrade your safety knowledge.
Recognized by organizations and companies in your profession, this course gives you the safety skills necessary to remove or trim trees near energized powerlines. Delivered one-week in-class and the second-week off-site (training mostly outdoors in the field), this course is one of the components you must complete to apply for certification as a Utility Tree Worker or Utility Tree Trimmer in Alberta.

Utility Tree Worker and Utility Tree Trimmer Certification Course
To become a certified Utility Tree Worker or Utility Tree Trimmer, you must successfully complete this PVMA-sanctioned Certification course. In this course, you will be educated & assessed regarding best safety practices and hazard awareness while trimming trees and ground cover close to energized utility infrastructure. Please note that you must have pre-approval from the PVMA office to attend this course.

Deadlines: Applications for attendance Spring 2026 are now CLOSED. You are still welcome to submit school applications, but it will be for the next course intake estimated to be Spring 2027.
Please Note: Students will need their own computer with internet access, a microphone and a web camera for the online Virtual classes and exams
Utility Tree Worker and Utility Tree Trimmer Recertification
As a certified Utility Tree Worker or Utility Tree Trimmer, you must complete this recertification course every five years. In this online course, you will be updated on current electrical safety standards and safety practices important to you on the job. If you choose to attend the in-person course, you are welcome to.
*If your certification has EXPIRED, you MUST attend the re-certification course in person. If you did not successfully complete your last re-certification course, you MUST attend in person and successfully complete it in order to re-certify.
**Once you successfully complete a re-certification course, you must then complete an Application for re-certification, sign a new Code of Conduct and submit both to the PVMA office, along with the application fee, in order to have your certification renewed and a new Certificate and Wallet card issued.

STUDENTS SHOULD BE COMFORTABLE WITH COMPUTERS AND SHOULD BE PREPARED TO LOCATE AND SCHEDULE A PROCTOR TO WRITE THE EXAM WITHIN THE 2-WEEK COURSE DATES. IT IS IMPORTANT TO CONTACT A PROCTOR ASAP TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT.

Optional Stump Treatment Pesticide Certificate Tutorial
The Stump Treatment Pesticide Certificate is required for individuals applying herbicides to stumps and is available only to those with a Utility Tree Worker or Utility Tree Trimmer Certificate. The Stump Treatment tutorial and exam are optional and offered on the following dates. Your Stump Treatment Certification follows your UTT/UTW certification, so when it expires, so does your Stump Treatment.
