Reporting to the Planning Supervisor, this position is responsible for ATCO’s implementation of new technological developments in remote sensing and analytical techniques and incorporating them into ATCO’s vegetation management program planning. Additionally, this position explores and evaluates the business drivers of new technologies, especially innovations in the fields of GIS data and remote sensing research.
• Lead the ATCO Forestry Technology Modernization Initiative and provide progress status as key projects are started;
• Investigate and recommend new technologies (LiDAR, 3D imagery, and other products) based on an evaluation of cost of acquisition and business validity. Then create associated business cases and/or business integration documents to support the use of these technologies;
• Lead annual LiDAR acquisition project and data analysis;
• Oversee projects and provide monthly budget and timeline tracking to management for each project;
• Development and/or investigation of new innovations through Pilot Projects to explore new technologies;
• Lead the development of risk-based variables into vegetation management planning such as wildfire risks;
• Lead efforts for the optimization of vegetation management programs;
• Review and QC data from projects;
• Provide GIS expertise and execute GIS related requests;
• Provide statistical and scientific based knowledge in Forest Growth and Yield data;
• Provide support for data management software platforms within the group;
• Work with other Senior Planners and Supervisor in the group to ensure integration of new technologies fit with Clearion software and Patrolling and Consenting requirements; and
• Act as the first level of support for field staff members to guide the use of key vegetation management system components.
• Experience administering remote sensing projects is an asset;
• Proficient in data analysis;
• Working knowledge of ESRI software and GPS technology for operational use;
• A degree in Forestry, Environmental Sciences or Business from a recognized post-secondary institute is an asset;
• Minimum seven (7) years of project management, database management, and software system support in a forestry or electric utility environment;
• Keen understanding of business processes, budget development, business planning and financial management;
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment while meeting multiple demands and priorities. Self-starter who needs very little guidance; and
• Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills including demonstrated ability to establish strong collaborative working relationships across teams and work groups.
